Wildland Urban Interface Forester (2 Positions Available)

Communicate the importance and need for forest management and forest fuels reduction to reduce the risk of catastrophic loss of lives and property to wildfire. Build relationships with elected officials, county emergency management, volunteer fire departments, and other stakeholders to promote the adoption of FireWise defensible space concepts to reduce the risk of catastrophic losses due to wildfire. Develop and implement a forest fuels reduction program, including educational material, events and workshops, and fuels reduction projects. Prepare FireWise community protection plans, landscape scale restoration plans, forest stewardship plans, and forest practice plans. Design and implement forest fuels reduction and FireWise defensible space projects. Inspect completed projects to ensure compliance with grant rules and regulations. Project planning and reporting. Significant work in forested landscapes, to include steep terrain, during all seasons and weather conditions. Positions located in Hartington and North Platte, NE.
Minimum Required Qualifications: Bachelor’s degree in forestry or closely related natural resources field with an emphasis on wildland fire, forest management, or silviculture plus one year of field forestry experience required. Working knowledge of Global Position System (GPS) equipment and the ability to read maps essential. Experience must demonstrate the ability to communicate effectively with others, both verbally and in writing.
Preferred Qualifications: Bachelor’s degree in fire science or closely related field. Coursework or experience in wildland fire behavior, forest ecology and silviculture, forest inventory and mensuration, geographic information systems, wildfire suppression, and fuels management. Experience implementing FireWise fuels reduction practices. Knowledge and understanding of fire behavior and forest fuels reduction/mitigation practices. Familiarity with forest contractor operations and crews using chainsaws, skidders, grinders, chippers, and other forest equipment.
