Job: Communications & Outreach Coordinator
Background: The South African Shark Conservancy (SASC) has openings for the positions described below. Successful candidates will gain unparalleled experience working with sharks and in the field of ocean conservation in Africa. Each position is available for a 6-month time period and is based in Hermanus, Western Cape, South Africa.
These are unpaid (volunteer) positions but SASC will provide breakfast, local work-related transportation and accommodation for the successful candidates. Successful candidates will be expected to provide international/domestic transportation to and from Cape Town International Airport (if required), medical insurance, appropriate immunizations (please consult a travel medicine doctor), medications and other personal requirements. All Candidates must be fluent in English.

Job description: The communications and outreach coordinator will coordinate SASC community outreach and engagement initiatives, including social media management, development and implementation of educational programmes, and other multi-media projects. He/she will work to increase the organization’s presence in the community and will build relationships with individuals, citizen groups and other organizations working with SASC. The communications and outreach coordinator will directly contribute to increasing SASCs capacity to protect South Africa’s ocean environment by developing its outreach programmes and increasing community support for the organization. He/she will develop and implement outreach strategies for active SASC research and communication campaigns and coordinate online outreach activities, including social media updates.
Qualifications: excellent organizational, written and oral communication skills. Project management experience with a proven track record working in outreach and education, preferably in the field of conservation. Detail oriented and committed to meeting deadlines. Excellent interpersonal skills. Works well independently and as part of a team. An ability to get along with others in a communal living situation is a must.
Time period: this position requires a minimum 6 month commitment. Weekend work required depending on organizations schedule.
