Hatchery-Algae Technician: The technician will perform daily detailed tasks primarily involving the culture of marine microalgae and all other aspects related to shellfish production and restoration. Applicant will be trained on algae culture techniques, hatchery production, and care of various species of shellfish. Applicant will learn how to independently operate different types of seawater systems used in rearing high-density shellfish. This position will provide a well-rounded introduction and exposure to shellfish aquaculture and hatchery techniques in a fun learning environment.
Oyster Restoration/Shell Recycling Technician: The first oyster restoration project on Nantucket was implemented in 2017 by the Natural Resources Department (NRD). The project’s main goal is to restore a native oyster species, that once was prevalent in our waters, and now is functionally extinct. The Town’s Shell Recycling Program collects oyster and quahog shells from various restaurants and raw bars which to be used as the foundation during oyster restoration. This internship is intended to be an educational and broad experience in the field of marine science, with a focus in aquaculture. The candidate will work closely with the Assistant Biologist to collect data in the field, learn shellfish hatchery techniques, and complete shell recycling tasks. A successful candidate will be a strong team player, however, confident working independently to complete necessary tasks assigned by the NRD supervisor.
Water Resources/Shell Recycling Technician: This seasonal position will include working within the Town of Nantucket’s Natural Resources Department with both the Assistant Biologist, in coordinating the Town of Nantucket’s Shell Recycling Program, as well as the Water Resource Specialist, in water quality testing and monitoring. The Shell Recycling Program collects quahogs and oyster shells from 30 restaurants and raw bars which are used to build future oyster reefs in Nantucket waters. This program is in the public eye and raises awareness about the important work done by NRD in fulfilling its mission to “preserve, protect, and restore Nantucket’s natural resources.” The Water Quality Program manages and monitors Nantucket’s water resources by sampling the Harbors and Great Ponds. This position is an educational and broad experience in the field of marine science and aquaculture.
