This is a Survey Specialist 1 (Junior Crew Chief/ Instrument) position primarily supporting all field surveying activities; mostly under senior (Crew Chief) supervision, also independently as a Junior Crew Chief with minimum supervision.
Experienced Specialist Survey Instrument Technician that supports, directs and supervises activities of a survey crew and reviews work for accuracy and sufficiency. Operates survey-related instruments, such as a total-station, Hydrographic fathometer, levels, GPS units and Drone-Unmanned Aerial Systems. Records legible field notes, performs field inspections and prepares status reports documenting consultant progress. Provides quality control and quality assurance for field surveys and deliverables. Coordinates and provides direction for surveying consultants and customers. Participates in developing and maintaining the survey database.
Accountabilities require proven field crew support and leadership skills, high level organizational skills, and excellent communication skills. Can communicate and interact professionally with other surveying professionals, customers and land owners. Candidate understands nature of work and thrives in an outdoor work environment.
The candidate must be able to fill in for Survey Crew Chief as-needed. Have expertise and abilities to work in-around Water-Craft (vessels); All-Terrain Vehicles and Airboat, a plus. Position requires extensive travel/driving or involve extended overnight travel throughout the Districts 16-County Region. Knowledge/Experience in AutoCAD drafting applications, a plus.
Position may be filled as Survey Technician 3.
Survey Specialist 1: Typically has High School Diploma or GED with supplemental college courses in land surveying and 5+ years’ experience performing work on a survey field crew with periodic supervision; or five (5) plus years’ experience performing CAD, surveying and drafting work. A combination of experience, roles and education can be considered.
Survey Technician 3: Typically has High School Diploma or GED and 4+ years experience for both the Field and for the Office position. Experience for a FIELD Position includes one to two years extensive experience operating surveying instruments. Experience for an OFFICE Position includes supplemental college business courses and experience in an office environment performing data entry and administrative duties with a knowledge of the land surveying profession and business.
Valid State of Florida Driver’s License is required.
Physical Requirements/Working Environment
Due to the District’s response role and in the total scope of emergency management, this position may at times, be required to provide support before, during and after major storm events and emergency situations, such as hurricanes or other declared emergencies, depending on assigned emergency response role.
Composition of office and field work (percentage dependent upon position requirements), with regular exposure to a hot and humid environment in remote and heavy vegetative areas.
Salary Minimum: $35,048.00
Salary Midpoint: $41,683.20
