Job description: The State Forest Technician, stationed at the Virginia Dept. of Forestry’s Appomattox-Buckingham State Forest, will perform forest management duties including timber management, fire suppression, equipment operation, forest maintenance, and wildlife management. The incumbent will: conduct timber inventory, identify timber sale boundaries and stream side management zones, inspect logging operations for contract and water quality compliance, perform intermediate silvicultural practices, and tree marking for intermediate silviculture. Perform fire suppression and/or fuels management duties under adverse conditions of climate, fuels, and terrain. Be responsible for operation and maintenance of specialized heavy equipment. Maintain and construct roads, bridges, and other infrastructure assets. Develop and maintain wildlife food plots by burning, disking, seeding, and herbicide application. Supervise and direct seasonal contract workers and wage employees in a wide variety of forestry projects such as trail clearing, tree planting, etc. Communicate with foresters, scientists, and the public about ongoing forestry and conservation activities. Minimum qualifications: High School diploma or GED. Ability to operate, maintain, and repair minor problems with heavy equipment. Must have a valid Virginia driverâ??s license. Ability to use hand-held tree tally devices, smart phones, GPS device, and basic computer skills such as Microsoft Word.
Preferred qualifications: Two year Forestry Associates degree preferred or five years of experience and proficiency in outlined job duties. Proficient in use and maintenance of a farm tractor, bush hog, dozer, skid steer, backhoe, dump truck, road grader and road tractor with lowboy.
Special requirements: Must obtain a Class A driver’s license within six months of employment. Must pass moderate physical fitness test, per Federal guidelines, prior to employment offer. The test consists of walking 2 miles in 30 minutes carrying a 25-pound pack. Selected candidate is required to be drug tested and pass a criminal background check. Both positions will have statewide responsibilities. Approximately 40% of time will be away from assigned work area.
