GreenWorks!
GreenWorks! is the service-learning, community action program of PLT. Built around action projects that partner educators, students, and communities. GreenWorks! blends service activities with the academic curriculum and addresses real community needs as students learn through active engagement.
GreenWorks! environmental action projects link classroom learning and the real world. By combining the environmental knowledge and resources of PLT with community action initiatives, GreenWorks! action projects make a difference in how young people think, in their sense of responsibility toward their communities, and in their understanding of their relationship to the environment. Many PLT activities in both the PreK-8 and secondary curriculum guides lend themselves to GreenWorks! projects.
Do you have an idea for an exciting service-learning or community action project for your students but you don't have enough funds to implement it? Why not apply for one of PLT's GreenWorks! grants? GreenWorks! offers educators the opportunity to apply for grants to implement community action and service-learning projects. Across the country, PLT trained educators teaching in both formal and non-formal settings are eligible to apply for and receive GreenWorks! grants.
The majority of the projects will be funded between $250 to $1,000. A select number of proposals of greater scope and reach will be funded up to $5,000.
PLT provides a guidebook with practical pointers for getting a GreenWorks! project off and running. You can also apply for a GreenWorks! grant to help get you started on your project.
The guide has five parts that cover:
- An overview of community action projects and their benefits to students;
- The connection between service learning in the curriculum and environmental action projects;
- How to develop, plan, and implement a successful project;
- Example of successful GreenWorks! projects;
- PLT activities, templates and other tools, and resources.
You can download this free guide from the National PLT Web site or contact the Florida PLT Coordinator.
GreenWorks! projects are fun, benefit the community, and, perhaps most importantly, reinforce the learning that takes place in the classroom.
