STATE JOB TITLE: DMR-Marine Fisheries Scientist II
ANNUAL STARTING SALARY: $31,634.42
OFFICE/BUREAU: Marine Fisheries/Shellfish Bureau
LOCATION: Harrison County/Biloxi, Mississippi
RECRUITMENT DATES: February 11 – February 17, 2021
ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS: This is proficiency level scientific work with responsibility for providing scientific expertise in the areas of marine fisheries management and regulation for the Shellfish Bureau of the Mississippi Department of Marine Resources. The work involves conducting surveys and investigative research studies and inspections; conducting field and/or laboratory tests; and analyzing, evaluating, and interpreting field data in order to provide recommendations to upper level management with the information necessary to make management and regulatory decisions regarding marine fisheries. Successful interaction with members of local, state, and federal regulatory entities, special interest groups, and the general public, and speaking before large and small groups is required. Knowledge of the coastal habitat for marine fisheries, the various species typically found in Mississippi Coastal waters, and the laws, rules, processes, procedures, and regulations affecting the marine environment and fisheries are necessary for the successful performance of the job. The duties are performed using independent judgment and discretion under the direct supervision of a higher-level scientist. Work is reviewed through regular meetings and conferences. Supervision is received from a DMR-Marine Fisheries Scientist V, a Biological Program Coordinator or the Bureau Director through periodic meetings and conferences. This is a time-limited position dependent on continued funding.
EXPERIENCE/EDUCATIONAL REQUIREMENTS: Experience: One (1) year of experience as a DMR-Marine Fisheries Scientist I. OR Education: A Master’s Degree from an accredited four-year college or university in Marine Biology, Biology, Fisheries Biology, Biological Science, Marine Ecology, Ichthyology, or a related field. OR Education: A Bachelor’s Degree from an accredited four-year college or university in Marine Biology, Biology, Fisheries Biology, Biological Science, Marine Ecology, Ichthyology, or a related field; AND Experience: One (1) year experience related to the described duties. Substitution Statement: Above graduation from a standard four-year college or university, related education and related experience may be substituted on an equal basis.
