FAQ - Frequently Asked Questions

Am I required to have any special computer skills for these online courses?

Not at all. The computer skills necessary for successful participation in these online courses are quite basic. You must have regular access to a computer and be familiar with routine computer skills, such as Windows, e-mail, basic typing, and Internet browsing.

Can I continue on to a University of Florida degree after I complete the certificate?

The main goal of these courses are for certificate purposes. However, the course content is similar to those courses offered for the UF Geomatics degree. If you later decide to pursue the UF Geomatics degree, our present plan is to accept these courses for transfer. HOWEVER, if you are already enrolled in UF, you MAY NOT take these courses for your program. You must take the regular courses offered.

Do I need to come to Gainesville, Florida to participate in this program?

No, this program is taught entirely through the internet. You will never need to physically come to The University of Florida.

Does the Geomatics Certificate provide national or state certification or licensing?

No, you must approach your state Board for applications procedures for a Surveying and Mapping license. Our program provides you with a certificate from the University of Florida. It should prepare certificate earners academically for content of state licensure examinations including national exams from the National Council of Examiners for Engineering and Surveying NCEES

How are the courses delivered?

The courses are delivered through Sakai. Students will log on to the internet and the Sakai site. On the Sakai site students can get their assignments, interact with their instructor and classmates and submit assignments.

How do I apply?

To apply, go to: http://sfrc.ufl.edu/gemcertificate/apply.shtml.

How long does it take to complete the certificate program?

This program was designed to accommodate those currently working in surveying and mapping. If you take one or two course per UF semester you may complete the certificate in roughly 18 months - one and a half years.

How many courses are in this program?

There are 5 courses to be offered and required for the certificate. Other elective courses are planned.

How much does the program cost?

Review our current tuition rates.

I already work as a geomatics Professional. How would this program benefit me?

Many existing professionals do not have a college degree. This certificate does not lead to a four or two year degree, it leads to a certificate “diploma” suitable for framing. It can be presented in court and to clients as evidence of expertise. Also the courses can be applied toward degree programs in a variety of disciplines upon transfer approval by the institution granting the degree.

I already work as a surveying and mapping technician. How would this program benefit me?

If you live in a state requiring a four-year degree, then these courses could be accepted for transfer at the option of the institution you’re seeking a degree from.

Other states require a CORE program in surveying of a certain number of hours. This certificate and the courses involved should be acceptable as meeting the surveying CORE.

All persons must pass the state and national surveying exams. This certificate should assist the candidate with successful performance on licensure exams.

Do the completed courses result in a University of Florida transcript?

Yes, following the completion of your first course, the university will create an official transcript for you that will stay at UF for your use in the future. Each subsequent completed course will be added to the official transcript. You may furnish your official transcript to any employer, board, or agency upon your request to the university.

Is transfer work accepted for this program?

Courses may be transferred and accepted into this program to replace equivalent required courses, pending approval.

What computer programs and equipment do I need?

Consult the official University of Florida computer and software requirements for general recommendations and a sample computer configuration. A computer with Microsoft Windows operating system and Internet Explorer 5.0 or higher will be sufficient for these online courses. Online students will also need a high speed connection to the Internet through broadband connection. You will also need programs of the MS Office Suite: MS Word, and MS Excel.

What internet browser will I need to take these online courses?

Currently, on Windows based PCs, Sakai performs best using Firefox 3.x, or Internet Explorer 7.x or 8.x. For Macs, use Firefox 3.x. Opera, Chrome and other browsers are not supported for use with e-Learning in Sakai.

Where can I go for computer support?

Online help for Sakai (the computer application used to run the online courses) is available at: https://lss.at.ufl.edu/help/Student_Faq

For more computer trouble shooting tips and login advice, please contact the UF Help Desk (392-HELP or helpdesk@ufl.edu).

Will a slow typist get behind in class?
