Harold Mikell, a native of Gilcrist County, graduated from the SFRC in 1950 and immediately joined the US Navy. Afterwards he began a long and illustrious career with the Florida Forest Service. During his 41 years he rose through the ranks becoming the Chief for Fire Control and in 1991 State Forester and Director. His retirement in 1993 was short lived as he became Agricultural Liaison for Representative Pete Peterson and then Allen Boyd. He and his wife Juanita resided in Tallahassee most of their lives but spent as much time as they could at their farmhouse near Trenton. Harold, a long-time supporter of the School, served as President of its Alumni Organization and a Member of the School Advisory Board. He was the stimulus for the initiation of the Spring Symposium that the School stages for the SAF and FFS foresters. We are grateful that he and Juanita named the Library in the new Learning Center.
In their own words:
As I looked back over my career, I wanted to leave something to show appreciation for the benefits I received from the School of Forest Resources and Conservation, and the University of Florida.
