What is forest biometrics?
Forest
biometrics research is concerned with the analysis of quantitative problems,
the development of quantitative management tools, and the application of
statistical methods within forest and ecosystem science.
What does a forest biometrician do?
Forest
biometricians create growth and yield models, set up data sampling protocols,
analyze experimental data, create new sampling tools, and MORE. My research aims to promote better forest
conservation and management by developing a better understanding of the
dynamics of forested systems.
Specifically, my current research includes (but is not limited to):
* Design and analysis of experimental data on
growth, production, and regeneration of tropical tree species, with an emphasis
on the magnificent Brazil nut tree (with Kainer, Wadt, et al.)
* Quantification of uncertainty in forest
simulation models (with my graduate student, Denis Valle)
* Response of intensively managed slash pine to
uneven-management conversion scenarios (with my graduate student, Nilesh
Timilsina)
* Quantifying size and structure distributional differences in forests
(with LeMay), and in particular, in pure- versus mixed-family stands of managed
southern pine (with Jokela, Martin, et al.)
*
Predicting
damage and debris generated by urban forests during hurricane events (with
Escobedo, and graduate students Alicia Lawrence and Benjamin Thompson)
·
Building and
enhancing models of urban forest structure and growth, and their responses to
hurricanes and exotic invasive woody species in the southeastern US and Puerto
Rico (with Escobedo, Young, Zipperer)
* Investigating the utility of
zero-inflated Poisson models to forestry applications
