Background: The Alachua County Parks and Conservation Lands Department is seeking applicants for an Environmental Specialist Position to assist the Land Conservation Program with management of preserves, acquired through the Alachua County Forever Bond and the Wild Spaces Public Places Sales Tax.
Eligible candidates will possess knowledge of land management techniques, ecological forestry practices, and North Central Florida ecology, flora and fauna. Desirable skills include evaluating and restoring natural resources, exotic plant control, preserve maintenance, site security, a working knowledge of forestry practices, and the ability to perform all duties related to prescribed burning. Candidates should be able to present outreach programs, oversee contractors and volunteers, use small equipment and farm tractors, and perform extensive fieldwork, both independently and with a team. A valid State of Florida Class A Commercial Driver’s License, completion of S130/190 Basic Wildland Firefighter Training, and basic mechanical skills are highly desirable. Knowledge of computers, word processing, spreadsheets, Arc GIS and GPS is also desirable.
Minimum qualifications: Bachelor’s degree with major course work in environmental science, environmental engineering, chemistry, natural science, or a related field and one year of related environmental experience, or any equivalent combination of related training and experience. Must possess a valid State of Florida driver’s license. Successful completion of a criminal history background investigation is required prior to employment.
