The John Heinz National Wildlife Refuge is seeking a community intern from the greater Philadelphia
commuting area to join our team and represent the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service for this unique
internship opportunity. Gain experience assisting with the Urban National Wildlife Initiative in
the city of Philadelphia by facilitating partnerships and assisting with refuge communications.
Work with a variety of diverse audiences. The right applicant will have the following skills:
Sensitivity to the needs of people from multiple cultures and ethnicities
Comfortable speaking in front of people
Strong writing and communication skills
Ability to work with a variety of groups, including partners, community leaders, and staff Ability
to work with community members in economically stressed communities
Strong computer skills in word processing programs, spreadsheets, and social media
Flexibility to work evenings to attend community meetings and some weekend hours Valid driving
license and transportation
Major Duties Include:
-Partnerships: Coordinates with local community and conservation organizations to increase
awareness of the wildlife refuge and US Fish and Wildlife Service. Maintains working relationships
with partners by attending a variety of events and functions, giving informative talks, and asking
for volunteer or other assistance. Intern will work with Service and partner staff to build
relationships with targeted communities, and work with those communities to develop mutual
restoration sites in the communities. The position will include attending community meetings,
partner meetings, working with interested parties in strategically planning the work, as well as
-Communication: Effectively communicates with urban audiences through interpretive activities that
aid in implementing the refuge’s outreach program. Drafts a variety of written materials including
news releases, articles, correspondence, event ﬂyers, and social media messages. These materials
aid in increasing understanding of the US Fish and Wildlife Service mission, encourage attendance
at or assistance with special events, and explain the goals and objectives of the refuge.

John Heinz National Wildlife Refuge at Tinicum is America’s First Urban national Wildlife Refuge

The staff at the refuge will provide training and support to you as you develop your environmental
education programs. Teacher training at the refuge will be available for you to take as well as the
various volunteer program trainings.
