From Minnesota he went to North Carolina State University, where he served as Research Professor and Professor of Forest Management through 1950. Prior to coming to the University of Florida, Dr. Kaufman was employed as a student assistant on the Cloquet Forest Experiment Station, as Assistant Forester with the Minnesota Agricultural Extension Service and, for seven years, as a teacher and researcher with the School of Forestry, North Carolina State College. During this seven year period he advanced from Assistant Professor to Professor of Forest Management. At N.C. State he was highly regarded for his ability in guiding graduate students. This was evidenced most recently here when one of his former master's students received the award for having the outstanding master's thesis in IFAS. In June, 1951, Dr. Kaufman assumed duties at the University of Florida as Director of the School of Foresty and Professor of Silviculture. He served in this capacity until 1962. During his administration he was instrumental in the development of the School's research program. A research and development cooperative in forest genetics was organized and is still active with ten forest industries and the Florida Division of Forestry as cooperators. It was also during his administration that the research program of the School was reorganized as part of the Florida Agricultural Experiment Stations system. In 1962, Dr. Kaufman relinquished his duties as Director to return full time to teaching and research in forest soils, forest drainage and root development of pine. He has been an extremely valuable faculty member making special contributions as Chairman of the School's Curricula Revision Committee and as a consultant on two short term tours to the College of Forestry, National Agricultural Institute, Saigon. Dr. Kaufman has been an active member of the Society of American Foresters particularly as a member of its Committee for Advancement of Forestry Education, The Ecological Society of America, Sigma Xi and Xi Sigma Pi honoraries. He has served as Chairman of the Official Board and Lay Leader of University Methodist Church and is an active member of the Gainesville Rotary Club. His hobbies include rose culture and cabinet making. Dr. Kaufman is married
