 Identifying Characteristics
Size/Form:
Saltgrass is a medium grass reaching 1' to 2' in height. Can grow into large monocultures. This creeping grass has scaly rhizomes.
Leaves:
Upper leaf blades two vertical ranks opposite on stem. Stiff, sharp pointed, and flat to folded to rolled. Leafs are longer than they are wide, 1" to 6" long by 1/4" wide. Leaves have parallel ridges. Salt crystals can be found on the blades and stems.
Fruit:
Nutlets are smooth and oval reaching 1/16" in length.
Flowers:
Inflorescence broad spike-like, to 3" long. Spikelets are tan.
Habitat:
Saltgrass is sun tolerant and is found in salt and brackish coastal marshes.
